Travel to the Orkney Islands.

Go to  http://www.visitorkney.com for travel and accommodation information.

A little extra information to help you.

There are 3 main ports with depart for Orkney from mainland Scotland.

FROM ABERDEEN

Aberdeen Harbour, Jamieson’s Quay, Aberdeen, AB11 5NP, United Kingdom (operated by Northlink Ferries.)  Aberdeen is an East Coast transport hub recommended for Car/Passenger Ferry into Kirkwall, Orkney Islands.

We recommend travelling North from Aberdeen Harbour on Sunday 23rd October 17.00 sailing arrive into Kirkwall at 23.00 same day, and Departing south again Saturday 29th October 23.45 arrive 7.30am following day OR stay for the Saturday night session and depart Sunday 30th October 23.45

This method takes you straight into Kirkwall. You will spend 7 hours at sea www.northlinkferries.co.uk

DRIVE TO THE NORTH TIP OF SCOTLAND

Scrabster Harbour  Queen Elizabeth Pier, Scrabster, Caithness, KW14 7UT, United Kingdom (Northlink Ferries.)  Scrabster is located at the extreme north tip of Scotland recommended by Car/Passenger Ferry into Stromness, Orkney Islands.

The MV Hamnavoe sails 3 times per day and you will only spend 1 ½ hours at sea.

If you prefer to enjoy the road/drive/train scenery of the extreme north of Scotland and take a shorter ferry ride then this route is for you.

Trains and Buses link up to the ferry in Scrabster see National Rail Enquiries Inverness to Thurso route.  Transport to and from ferry terminals in to your accommodation in Orkney can be provided (by prior arrangement only).

Gills Bay  Gills Bay Ferry Terminal, Canisbay, Wick, Caithness, KW1 4YB, United Kingdom (Pentland Ferries.)  Sailing from Gills Bay to St Margaret’s Hope in Orkney is an alternative to travelling from Scrabster. It also offers a slightly different sailing timetable. Travelling through Gills Bay entails a slightly longer drive both in Scotland and upon arrival in Orkney but you will pass through the famous John o Groats to get here.

The “Pentalina” sails 3 times a day but you will only spend 1 hour at sea www.pentlandferries.co.uk

BY AIR

Or take the plane – flights are available with Flybe (they are the only airline and they can be expensive). They leave most major Scottish airports (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness) www.flybe.com.
