The Orkney Strathspey and Reel Society was founded over 60 years ago (1948)  With leader George Stewart it had an impressive membership of 28 which included fiddle, guitar and accordion.

The Society is highly regarded locally as one of the counties most respected and established musical groups having performed across the county numerous times and having made a number of recordings.

Members of the society have included many ‘weel kent’ Orcadian musicians such as Pat Shearer, Ronnie Aim, Hugh Inkster, Davy Eunson as well as ‘bringing on’ new young players including Jennifer & Hazel Wrigley.

They meet every* Thursday evening at The Reel at 8pm until around 10pm and welcome new players and listeners along.

The Junior section of the Strathspey and Reel meet from 6.30pm to 8pm  every Thursday, also at The Reel, again new players always welcome.

* it is advisable to confirm by calling The Reel in advance (particularly during holidays) to avoid disappointment.

“ The joy of playing traditional music brings the Society members together each week with regular practices at 'The Reel' in Kirkwall.

From its beginnings in 1948, they have performed with great enthusiasm at various events throughout Orkney and continue to keep the traditional style alive by always encouraging young players to join in.

The future is bright as the Society currently boasts a good number of young players.”
